What Is the CatGenie A.I.?

The CatGenie A.I. is unlike any other automatic litter box. Instead of raking clumps into a drawer, it washes reusable granules with a sanitizing solution, then flushes the waste down your drain — like a tiny cat toilet. The “A.I.” part refers to its ability to learn your cat’s bathroom patterns and run cleaning cycles at optimal times.

Design & Installation

Let’s address the elephant in the room: installation is not simple. The CatGenie connects to a water supply line and a drain (laundry hookup or toilet). You’ll need basic plumbing access and about 45 minutes to set things up. If your laundry room or bathroom isn’t near where you want the box, this could be a dealbreaker.

The unit itself is large — about the size of a standard top-entry litter box but taller. It needs clearance for the water hose and drain line. Plan your placement carefully before purchasing.

How the Washing Cycle Works

After your cat uses the box, the CatGenie’s scooping arm rotates through the granules and removes solids. Then water fills the basin, the cleaning solution dispenses, and the granules get a full wash. Dirty water drains out, and a hot-air dryer finishes the cycle.

The whole process takes 30-38 minutes. It works, and the granules come out genuinely clean. But it’s loud — a noticeable mechanical hum fills the room. If the box is near your bedroom, nighttime cycles will wake you up.

The A.I. Scheduling

The smart scheduling feature learns when your cat typically uses the box and times cleaning cycles accordingly. After about a week of use, it stops running unnecessary cycles and focuses on post-use cleaning. You can also trigger cycles manually through the app or set fixed schedules.

Ongoing Costs & Maintenance

No litter to buy is a real perk, but you will need replacement cleaning solution cartridges ($25 each, lasting about a month for one cat). The granules last approximately four months before needing replacement ($25 per box).

Maintenance is the bigger concern. In our two-month test, we dealt with one drain clog and one instance where the scooping arm got stuck on a large clump. Both required manual intervention and weren’t fun to resolve.

The Verdict

The CatGenie A.I. is ambitious technology that delivers on its core promise — you genuinely never scoop litter. But the complex installation, loud operation, and occasional maintenance issues hold it back from being a simple recommendation. It’s best for cat owners who have easy plumbing access, don’t mind the upfront cost, and value a truly hands-free experience despite the tradeoffs.
