What Is the Halo 3 Collar?

The Halo 3 is a GPS smart collar that creates virtual fences — invisible boundaries you define on a map. When your dog approaches a boundary, the collar provides escalating feedback (tone, vibration) to encourage them to turn back. It’s like an invisible fence without burying wires, and you can create multiple zones anywhere.

Design & Build

The Halo 3 is a thick, sturdy collar with integrated GPS hardware, speakers, and vibration motors. It looks like a premium dog collar with a slightly bulky tech pod on top. Build quality is excellent — waterproof, impact-resistant, and clearly designed to survive active dogs.

That said, it’s only suitable for dogs 20 pounds and up. The collar has some weight to it, and smaller breeds would find it uncomfortable. For medium to large dogs, it sits naturally and our test dog (a 60 lb Lab mix) wore it without any apparent discomfort.

Virtual Fence Setup

You create fences in the Halo app by drawing boundaries on a satellite map. You can set up as many zones as you want — your yard, a walking route, a friend’s property. Each fence has a customizable “warning zone” buffer where the collar begins feedback, and a hard boundary where feedback intensifies.

Setup takes some patience. Getting the fence boundaries exactly right requires zooming in on the map and tracing your property carefully. Expect 15-20 minutes for your first fence. After that, creating new zones takes just a few minutes.

How the Training Works

When your dog approaches a fence boundary, the collar goes through escalating feedback: a tone first, then vibration at increasing intensities. No electric shock — the system uses only sound and vibration. Cesar Millan’s training methodology is built into the system with included training programs.

In our testing, our Lab learned the boundaries within about 5-7 days. The training program is well-structured, starting with supervised sessions where you guide the dog near boundaries and reinforce the feedback with treats and praise. It requires active participation — this isn’t a set-and-forget solution.

GPS & Activity Tracking

Beyond fencing, the collar provides standard GPS tracking via cellular. You can see your dog’s location on a map and get alerts if they leave a zone. Activity monitoring tracks steps, rest time, and calories burned.

GPS accuracy is within 10-20 feet — comparable to the Whistle GO Explore. Location updates come every few seconds during active tracking.

Battery & Subscription

Battery life is the biggest pain point: 24-48 hours depending on how active the GPS and fence features are. Plan on nightly charging. The collar uses a proprietary magnetic charger.

The subscription runs $29/month on annual plans or $49 month-to-month. It covers cellular connectivity, GPS tracking, firmware updates, and the training program content. Steep on top of the $699 hardware.

The Verdict

The Halo 3 delivers on its core promise — a portable virtual fence that works anywhere without buried wires. If you have property where a physical fence isn’t practical, or you want boundaries when traveling, the technology works. But the total cost of ownership ($699 + $29-$49/month) makes it a serious investment. Best for dedicated dog owners with unfenced property and the budget to match.
