What Is the PetSafe Smart Feed 2.0?

The PetSafe Smart Feed 2.0 is a wi-fi connected automatic pet feeder that dispenses dry food on a schedule you set via the app. It holds up to 24 cups of kibble and can deliver up to 12 meals per day in precise portions. It’s designed for pet owners who need consistent feeding times, whether they’re at work, traveling, or just want to remove the guesswork from portion control.

Design & Build

The Smart Feed 2.0 is a tall, cone-shaped feeder with a stainless steel bowl at the base. The hopper is translucent, so you can see kibble levels at a glance. Build quality is solid — the plastic feels durable, and the stainless bowl is easy to remove for washing.

One design flaw: the hopper lid sits on top without a locking mechanism. Our test dog (a clever Golden Retriever) figured out how to nose it open within a week. If you have a determined pet, you may need to weigh down the lid or place the feeder where they can’t reach the top.

Scheduling & Portions

The PetSafe app lets you set up to 12 meals per day, each with a custom portion size from 1/8 cup to 4 cups. You can also trigger an immediate feeding from anywhere via the app — useful for treating your pet from work.

Portion accuracy was excellent in our testing. We measured dispensed food against the set amount and it was consistently within a tablespoon. The conveyor system is more precise than gravity-based feeders.

Slow Feed Mode

If your dog or cat eats too fast, the slow feed mode disperses each meal in smaller increments over a 15-minute window. Instead of dumping all the food at once, it releases a little at a time. Our speed-eating dog noticeably slowed down with this feature enabled.

Connectivity & Smart Home

The feeder connects via 2.4GHz wi-fi and integrates with Alexa and Google Assistant. You can say “Alexa, feed the dog” to trigger an immediate portion. Push notifications alert you when food is dispensed, the hopper is low, or the bowl is jammed.

Wi-fi reliability was our main frustration. The feeder disconnected from our network about once a week and required a power cycle to reconnect. Meals still dispensed on schedule during disconnections (the schedule is stored locally), but we couldn’t monitor or feed remotely until reconnected.

Who Should Buy This?

The PetSafe Smart Feed 2.0 is ideal for pet owners who need reliable automated feeding with precise portion control. If you travel frequently, work irregular hours, or have a pet on a strict diet, the scheduling flexibility is genuinely useful. Just make sure your pet can’t access the hopper lid.

The Verdict

The PetSafe Smart Feed 2.0 delivers consistent, accurate portions on a flexible schedule. The slow feed mode and large capacity are standout features. Wi-fi connectivity issues and the unlocked lid prevent a perfect score, but for dependable automated dry food dispensing, it’s one of the most capable options at this price point.
